In central Paris a closed community has existed for more than two hundred years. Most French people know it only from rare investigative pieces. It is called La Famille, “the Family.” It has no official spokespeople, almost no public face, and few pages online. Marriages are still mostly inside the circle. Yet thousands of members live among ordinary Parisians: they go to work, shops, and schools, and stay nearly invisible to neighbors.

La Famille began in 1819, when craftsman Jean-Pierre Thibault arranged a marriage alliance with the family of his friend François Have. Around a few households a closed circle grew. In the late 19th century a rule reshaped its future: marriage outside the group was effectively banned.

Members of La Famille still live near one another, mostly in eastern Paris. Researchers say many flats and houses stay in relatives’ hands for decades. One hub is the Rue de Montreuil area, where the Family is especially dense.

Outwardly they barely differ from other people in the capital. Men often work in construction, engineering, or trades; women traditionally focus on home and children. Large families remain normal here, though that is already rare in modern France.

The oddest rule is not about religion or dress. It is about contact. Former members told the French press that friendship outside the circle is discouraged from childhood. Kids attend regular schools but keep to themselves. A relationship with an outsider often means a full break with the family.
Closed as the lifestyle is, La Famille is not offline. Members use phones and the internet, but barely appear on social media. For Europe that is striking: a community of thousands stays almost invisible online.

French journalists and sociologists call it one of Europe’s most closed family communities. Authorities raise no public case against it: members break no laws and run no public campaign. That may be why the Family has kept its rules for more than two centuries, in the middle of one of the world’s most open and noisy cities.
