An expensive leather sofa can be ruined by something as small as a cat scratch. Keys that fall out of a pocket will do the same. There is no need to send the furniture for reupholstery and pay a hefty bill: you can fix a cut on a leather sofa yourself with liquid leather.
What you will need
- Liquid leather: match the sofa color exactly (you can mix two shades if needed).
- Reinforcing patch: a small piece of dense fabric or thin leather.
- Adhesive: a leather-specific glue or universal textile adhesive.
- Degreaser: rubbing alcohol or a dedicated cleaner.
- Tools: tweezers, a flexible plastic spatula (or an old bank card), and a dry cloth.
Step 1. Reinforce a through cut
If the cut is deep or goes all the way through, you cannot apply liquid leather straight into the gap — it will split open under the first load.
With tweezers, carefully tuck a piece of strong fabric under the leather, 1–1.5 cm larger than the cut itself. Apply a little glue between the backing and the underside of the leather, press the edges together, and let the adhesive dry for 15–20 minutes. That creates a solid base.
Step 2. Degrease and match the color
Wipe the cut and the area around it with alcohol. That removes dirt and grease and gives the liquid leather the best grip.
If the ready-made color is slightly off, mix the main tone with a drop of black, white, or brown on a separate piece of plastic until it matches the upholstery.
Step 3. Apply the compound in layers
Apply liquid leather with a flexible spatula or a thin layer using a plastic card, working it into the cut.
Do not try to fill the full depth in one go. Apply a thin first layer, let it dry for about 20–30 minutes, then add a second. Deep damage may need three or four thin passes.
Step 4. Recreate the texture
So the repaired spot does not look like a perfectly smooth patch on embossed leather, 5–7 minutes after the final layer lightly press a piece of real leather with a similar grain or a dry porous sponge against it.
Full curing takes 2 to 8 hours depending on layer thickness. Avoid using the sofa during that time.
