We treat a “real” mass session as 90 to 120 minutes of endless sets and long rests. Muscle science says the clock barely matters. Hypertrophy cares about effective reps. The Myo-Reps method from Norwegian coach Borge Fagerli packs that useful work into roughly two to three times less gym time.

Why a normal set wastes early reps
In a classic set of 12 with a moderate load, the first 7 to 8 reps feel easy. The body recruits smaller, low-threshold fibers. The real growth signal sits in the last 3 to 5 reps near failure, when high-threshold fibers finally fire.

After a set you rest 2 to 3 minutes. The muscle recovers fully, so the next set again burns 7 to 8 easy reps before you re-enter the effective zone. Myo-Reps cut that filler.
How to run Myo-Reps
The idea: get fibers fully recruited, then keep them there with short pauses.
- Activation set. Use a load you can lift for 12 to 20 clean reps (about 30 to 50% of 1RM). Stop 1 to 2 reps short of failure (RPE 8 to 9). That lights up the target muscle.
- Short rest-pause. Rack the weight for 10 to 15 seconds (or 3 to 5 deep breaths). Energy recovers only partly; the nervous system stays primed.
- Myo mini-sets. Same load, 3 to 5 reps. Because recovery is incomplete, every rep starts effective.
- Repeat. Rest 10 to 15 seconds again and do another 3 to 5. Keep going until form fails or you hit about five mini-sets.

A clean cycle: 15 reps (activation) → 12 sec rest → 4 → 12 sec → 4 → 12 sec → 4 → 12 sec → 3 (stop when reps drop).
Upside and hard safety rules

The win is time: the same useful stimulus in about 2 to 3 minutes per exercise instead of 10.
Two rules are non-negotiable:
- Isolation and machines only. Curls, lateral raises, leg extensions, lat pulldowns. Fixed paths keep you safer when fatigued.
- No heavy compounds. Skip Myo-Reps on squats, deadlifts, military presses, and hard lunges. Coordination breaks first; a spine or joint injury arrives faster than the target muscle gets the work.
Use Myo-Reps about once a week. Heavy basics should still own most of your training time.
