Good sleep depends not only on a comfortable mattress and a dark room, but also on what reaches your stomach in the two to three hours before bed. While the brain tries to slow the nervous system and enter deep recovery, active digestion keeps the body working hard. Certain foods before sleep trigger heartburn, blood-sugar swings, and nervous stimulation. Here are five food categories worth cutting from the evening menu.

Fatty and fried food
Steaks, burgers, fries, and rich sauces take serious effort to digest. When you lie down, a full stomach presses on the lower esophageal sphincter.

That leads to reflux and heartburn that can wake you at night, even if you do not fully notice it.
Spicy and heavily seasoned food
Hot sauces, chili peppers, and sharp spices contain capsaicin, which raises body temperature. For deep restorative sleep, the body instead needs a natural cool-down of about 0.5 to 1 degree Celsius.

The result: you toss and turn and settle for shallow sleep.
Aged cheeses and smoked meats
Parmesan, cheddar, blue cheeses, and dry sausages are high in the amino acid tyramine. In the body, tyramine converts into norepinephrine, a stress and wakefulness hormone.

It raises heart rate and blood pressure and keeps the brain active when it should be resting.
Chocolate and hidden caffeine
Most people know coffee before bed is a bad idea. Caffeine also hides in other familiar treats.

A few squares of dark chocolate or a cup of hot cocoa deliver a noticeable dose of caffeine and theobromine, which stimulate the cardiovascular system.
Sweets and fast carbs
Cakes, cookies, and sugary sodas spike blood glucose. The pancreas responds with a large insulin release, then sugar levels crash.

The body reads that swing as stress and tells the adrenal glands to release cortisol and adrenaline. You wake at 3 or 4 a.m. anxious and dry-mouthed.
What to snack on if hunger keeps you awake
If an empty stomach makes sleep impossible, do not just tough it out. Choose a light snack rich in tryptophan and magnesium.
A small handful of almonds, a banana slice, a cup of plain unsweetened yogurt, or warm chamomile tea will not wreck the night.
