Modern smartphones handle a huge workload, but even flagship devices occasionally freeze. The usual causes are a system glitch, overloaded RAM, or severe overheating. In most cases, you can fix the problem yourself in minutes without visiting a repair shop. These five simple steps can bring your iPhone or Android back to life.
Force-restart the phone
If the screen does not respond to touch, the normal power menu will not open. Use the hardware buttons instead:
- iPhone (8, SE 2/3, X, and newer): Quickly press and release Volume Up, then quickly press and release Volume Down. Next, hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
- Android: Hold the power and Volume Down buttons together for 10–15 seconds. Keep holding until the screen goes dark and the phone vibrates as it restarts. On some models, holding only the power button for 15–20 seconds is enough.
Close frozen and resource-heavy apps
Sometimes the operating system is fine and a single app has consumed the available RAM or become stuck in a loop.
- Open the recent-apps view by swiping up from the bottom to the middle of the screen, or by tapping the square navigation button on Android.
- Swipe every app upward to remove it from memory.
- Pay particular attention to demanding games, navigation apps, and video editors.
Free up internal storage
When storage is more than 85–90% full, the operating system cannot create temporary files such as caches and swap files, and performance can collapse.
- Telegram and other messengers are major storage hogs. Open the app's Settings → Data and Storage → Storage Usage, then clear the media cache.
- Delete unused apps, duplicate photos, and long video clips.
- Keep at least 5–10 GB of internal storage free for stable, responsive performance.
Update the operating system and apps
Bugs in apps or the operating system are a common cause of freezes. Developers regularly release patches that fix memory leaks.
Apps: Open the App Store, Google Play, or AppGallery and tap “Update All.”
Operating system:
- iPhone: Settings → General → Software Update.
- Android: Settings → System (or About Phone) → System Update.
Check the temperature and let the phone cool down
When a phone gets too hot—in direct sunlight, charging inside a case, or running a demanding game—processor protection kicks in and throttles performance. The slowdown can make the interface almost unusable.
- Remove the case.
- Disconnect the charging cable.
- Leave the phone in a cool place for 10–15 minutes. Do not put it in the refrigerator: a sudden temperature change can create dangerous condensation inside.
If none of these steps works and the device keeps freezing for no obvious reason, back up your data and perform a factory reset. If the problem remains, the battery may be worn out or the storage hardware may be damaged.
